City Council Work Session—May 24th

Design team members from Wolf Architecture and RSA Engineering delivered an in-person project overview and concept design update. A synopsis of the community outreach and communication efforts—including a soon-to-be-launched project update blog--were presented.

Council received three sets of concept plans in their packets, the distinctions and merits of which were illustrated and discussed at the work session. Each scheme utilizes the 2-3 story building to step down the 25’ of vertical drop across the site. While emergency response vehicles are staged on Mill Bay Road, administrative and public functions will take advantage of access from Chichenoff Street.

Fire Chief Frank Dorner and City Engineer Matt Holmstrom, reported on their May 17th visit to Valdez and meetings with the Fire Chief and Project Manager for the new station in Valdez. Lessons learned included both practical layout considerations and building systems advice to make the building be as functional and easy to regulate as possible.

Q&A covered aspects of how the Station will be seen and identified along Mill Bay Road, shared parking along Chichenoff, and how impacts to adjacent properties will be mitigated.

Council will be updated again in July after a single concept has been selected by the Core Project Group and developed by the design team.
