Update

Design work on the new Fire Station Replacement Project is complete and the next phase in the City’s long anticipated and much needed emergency services headquarters has begun. Last week, Wolf Architecture delivered Construction Documents drawings and specifications to the City, Building Official, and General Contractor for bidding and permitting.

Since mid-summer, the Design team and CMGC Contractor, Osborne Construction have worked to refine and clarify the design to align with budget priorities. Following reconciliation of the 65% estimate, an aggressive value-engineering effort was undertaken to ensure best value choices in all aspects of the design. In August, design and construction team members met on site with City Engineer Matt Holmstrom and PM Chris Lynch, to concur on money saving strategies for material export/import, terracing grades, and construction phase staging.

The 19,000 square foot final design product retains all the functional emergency response program spaces including: 5-bay drive through Apparatus Bay, Decontamination and Storage Spaces, interior and exterior Training Platforms, Crew Quarters, and Administrative Offices as well as a large, shared use Multipurpose Training Room. Ample paved Aprons off Mill Bay Road and shared Visitor/Public parking on Chichenoff. Landscape is utilitarian and screening is provided for adjacent residential properties.

At present, all scopes of the project are out for bidding. Drawing sets are being reviewed by USDA and the Kodiak Building Official. A December 19th Special Meeting is scheduled for Council consideration of the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) cost of construction. Pending Council approval of a contract, issuance of a Notice to Proceed will follow so that materials and equipment may be ordered. Groundbreaking is anticipated in April 2024 with a 16-month construction period.
